On the flip side, think of how silly you'd feel, if you were still alive to feel silly, if you absolutely had to fire your gun, and it didn't fire because your imperfect grip failed to disengage the grip safety. Also, how can a deactivated grip safety possibly contribute to an AD? When you grasp the gun in a firing grip, the safety is automatically disengaged (except as noted above). I have pinned the grip safety of every one of my 1911s, and sleep more soundly for having done so. That said, I wouldn't advise anyone else to do the same, and I certainly wouldn't suggest cutting a shok-buff in half, placing the "square" half on top of the mainspring housing and depressing the grip safety as the mainspring housing is pushed into place.
