In Response To: Large Detonics collection coming up (Robert Rayburn)

I photographed Col Gideon's Detonics collection Saturday, and will be
putting a list together soon. It includes about 59 guns plus a
sizeable quantity of parts, papers, and paraphernalia. I say _ABOUT_ 59 guns, because I think I might have missed one or two. On the other
hand, I might have photographed the same gun twice on one or more
occasions. I will be going back soon to clear up any errors.

The collection includes many very interesting guns: a .451 kit in
the Halliburton Case, marked 222 of 1000; a Janus (complete); several with two slides and four serial numbered barrels for 9mm, .38 Super, .45ACP, and .451Mag; SNs 2001 and 2002 and also the first two serial numbers in stainless; a matched engraved pair of stainless Combat Masters (don't remember which model) with consecutive SNs, one in .45ACP and one in .38 Super; numerous ServiceMasters and
ScoreMasters; several experimentals or prototypes; a couple that have
been converted to double action; unusual features such as channel
sights, finger grooved frontstrap, or unusual finish; and on and on.

Col Gideon was a skilled craftsman as well as a dedicated collector.
His hobbies included making custom knives and custom pistol grips. Many (maybe most) of the Detonics pistols in his collection have his own hand made grips of elephant ivory, walrus ivory, pearl, sheep horn, fancy exotic wood, etc. Several show his military background with inlays or scrimshaw representing West Point, the US Army, and the US Air Force.

There is also a thick binding containing engineering drawings and
specifications. Anyone want to build your own?
